My Group Fitness Manifesto

I want to lead fitness classes that build up our most basic beginners: their endurance, their confidence, their commitment to feeling good.

I  want to invite students to soak up a spirit of freedom and fun and to seriously sweat.

I want to create a fervor that blasts even our most advanced students to new levels of fitness, and

I want every move and groove accessible to those with injuries; we are flexible and we can adapt our moves to the unique changing needs of our bodies.

I want everyone to  feel the surge … the breath, the beat that makes our hearts so healthy.

How it feels is more important than how it looks.

I want to spread the belief that the splunder of music and robust movement can span a lifetime and spread smiles every step of the way. For everyone.

I believe that if after the party, we restore, we will soar.

Let us leave feelin the healin.

It’s Your Time – Let’s Move

Between the President’s Active Lifestyle Award (PALA) program, the First Lady’s Let’s Move campaign and the soaring gasoline prices, there’s never been a better time to get out of the driver’s seat and onto the sidewalk. We have abundant community support (even presidential support!) to get up and get moving.

The PALA Challenge truly lives up to its name. It helps you get active and then rewards you when you do. Whether its gardening, hula hooping, running or vacuuming, it all counts.

My daughters love to play with me outside.  Too often I turn them down; I’m attached to this notion of being too busy.  The PALA program has helped me challenge this notion. Not only is playing Chasing the Flag time with my kids, it’s a cardio workout. I run around trying to find that flag and then avoid being tagged by short people and all of a sudden any separation between fitness and fun – poof – is gone!

What I was avoiding becomes my favorite part of the day.

If you need yet another reason, this is National Women’s Health Week (May 8-14) coordinated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office on Women’s Health.

Take a small step or big leap into getting active this weekend. Stay healthy. Live your most vibrant life.

A few options for sports and fitness around town include:

  • Zumba Master Class at Reston Sport & Health,Isaac Newton Square, from Noon to 1:30 p.m. Open to public. $10
  • Yoga classes at Reston/Herndon studios including Beloved, Reston Bikram and Down Dog Yoga.
  • Hit the trails … what’s a little rain?
  • Window shop.
